Enterprise & Lifelong Learning Committee Visit Lewis
The Western Isles Information Technology sector is being studied by the Committee of Enterprise and Lifelong Learning. Committee members Annabelle Goldie (Cons) and Duncan MacNeil (Lab) MSPs visited a number of companies in Lewis on 29 August as part of their enquiry into the effect of the 'New Economy' on remote areas. During the day they visited the iomart net centre, Criticall, Point 1, Lewis Castle College, Lasair Information Services and WIE and were hosted by the Western Isles ICT Advisory Service.
At the ICT Advisory Service offices in Habost, Lochs they met local teleworkers working for Lasair and Voicepath and spent some time discussing the issues from the teleworkers' perspective.
The scope of the inquiry includes all issues related to the creation of jobs in the sector including training, telecommunications infrastructure, availability of suitable buildings and competitiveness in a global marketplace.
